OLGA ROMANOV: ACCIDENT ON “THE STANDART”
“Accident on our yacht”: From lesson book of Olga Romanov.
This year, we were once again sailing on our ‘yacht’ in the Finnish skerries. Unfortunately, this time our sailing trip was not completely successful. On 29th of August we were sailing at the speed of 13 knots. Around 5 o’clock I was in the Large dining room and they just brought Papa his ashtray , when suddenly [I] heard a loud cracking [noise]. It seemed to me that the ceiling was collapsing. After the first big push, two more followed, and the “yacht” tilted to its side. Right away we ran up to the deck and were told that we collided with a big rock. Everyone was transferred into ferries and life boats, while the “yacht” was being unloaded. After a half hour, we were transferred onto a ship ‘The Aleken’, and in about 3 hours to the mail boat ‘Aziza’. We were scared and felt sorry about leaving our dear ‘Standart’”.
