January 22  is the anniversary of Queen Victoria’s death in 1901.   In the nineteenth century, many members of the European royal families were closely related to each other.  Queen Victoria was referred to as “the grandmother of Europe” because her progeny were dispersed throughout the continent through the marriages of her numerous children.

Empress Alexandra was one of her granddaughters, and the uncle of Tsar Nicholas II was married to one of her daughters, so the family ties between the Romanov family and the English queen were pretty strong.  Both Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra referred to the English queen as “granny” or “grandmamma”.

  1. Dear Queen Victoria Ever Quit Wearing Black after Prince Albert’s
Death? Did she wear black in public all of the time after Albert’s
    death?

Why did Nicholas Call Victoria Granny or Grandmamama if they
    were cousins?
