ON THIS DATE IN THEIR OWN WORDS: OLGA ROMANOV TO EMPRESS ALEXANDRA. 23 APRIL, 1917

Olga Romanov and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna
Olga Romanov and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna

This poem by Alexei Konstantinovich Tolstoy was penned in 1859. Grand Duchess Olga Romanov copied it down and dedicated it to her beloved mother, Empress Alexandra, on 23 April, 1917.

“For suffering of others you are full of anguish,

And no one’s grief bypasses you.

Only to yourself are you relentless

Always merciless and forever cold!

But if your loving soul could see

Just once with someone else’s eyes your sorrow –

Oh, how you would pity you.

And how you would weep so sadly for yourself!”

То my beloved Маmа

[GARF.F. 673. Оp. 1. D. 73. L. 1].

К страданиям чужим ты горести полна,
И скорбь ничья тебя не проходила мимо;
