Earlier this week, the tomb of Tsar Alexander had once again been opened at the Peter & Paul Cathedral,  said a source familiar with the situation. Entrance to the Cathedral for the congregation was closed off and guarded by the police.

In recent weeks, preparations for the opening of the tomb of Alexander III were taking place. The opening began a few days ago.  Samples of the remains of Russian Tsar Alexander III, father of Nicholas II, will be obtained and shipped from St. Petersburg to Moscow for genetic research as soon as possible.

The head of the Russian State Archives Sergei Mironenko disclosed that his own version of the events:  that Alexander III’s tomb had NOT been previously opened by the Soviet authorities, was now confirmed. “I have spoken about this numerous times: the idea that the tomb had been previously opened by the Soviets was not based on any archival or historical evidence. Thank God everything turned out the way I had stated many times. The tomb had not been [previously] opened by anyone”, said Mironenko.

Earlier, the Russian Orthodox Church announced that the tomb of Alexander III may have been opened and possibly tampered with during the Soviet era. The Investigative Committee responded to this claim that there is no evidence of previous opening of the tomb.

In October,  samples from the remains of the last Russian Tsar Nicholas II, as well as from the clothing with blood of Tsar Alexander II (the former’s grandfather), were taken from St Petersburg to Moscow. All the tests are being carried out to (once again) confirm the authenticity of the remains of Tsarevich Alexei and Grand Duchess Maria.

According to the Senior Investigator of the Main Department of Criminology  Vladimir Soloviev, the criminal case on the death of the Romanov family is expected to be closed in early 2016.
