On December 1, 2015, three rare books: a personal diary of the Russian Emperor Alexander III and two of his books of days, were returned to the Director of the State Archive of the Russian Federation Sergei Mironenko. These books went missing 35 years ago and were considered irretrievably lost. A week ago, police seized them from a citizen who tried to get an appraisal of these historical antiquities at one of Moscow’s auction houses.

For those of you following the Romanov remains saga, this is a very unique photograph of the exhumation of the tomb of Tsar Alexander III at the St Peter & Paul Cathedral.
Samples from Alexander III’s remains will be compared to the genetic material of his son, Tsar Nicholas II, in order to (hopefully) resolve the long lasting dispute about the Romanov remains, and bury the two younger Romanov children: Grand Duchess Maria and Tsarevich Alexei.

Genetic samples from the remains of Tsar Alexander III have been transferred to several laboratories for comparison with the remains of his son Nicholas II.
The remains of two younger children of the last Russian Tsar, Grand Duchess Maria and Tsarevich Alexei, will be buried at the beginning of next year – according to the director of the Russian State Archives Sergei Mironenko.
