 At the turn of 20th century smoking cigarettes did not have the same stigma it does today. Hence the entire Romanov family – including Tsarevich Alexei – smoked!

Records of this can be found throughout the imperial family’s letters and diaries, as well as photographs. Below are excerpts from the diary of Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna which mention the subject of smoking.

ROMANOV FAMILY: NEW DNA TESTS ON REMAINS

October 2015.  Additional tests on the remains of the Romanov family are being conducted with the blessing of the Russian Orthodox Church. The process was put in motion after it was decided that it was now time to finally bury the remains of Tsarevich Alexei and Grand Duchess Maria, and the date for the burial was chosen: 18 October, 2015 – Tsarevich Alexei’s Namesday. It is unclear whether the burial will take place on this date, but the hope it that it will take place sooner rather than later. ROMANOV FAMILY: RARE PHOTOS – BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY’S VISIT ON THE STANDART.

On June 9, 1908,  King Edward VII became the first British monarch to visit Russia and his Romanov cousins.  Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra were Edward VII’s nephew and niece, and he met them and the entire Romanov family on the waters of the Bay of Reval (today Tallinn). The king and his wife, Queen Alexandra, joined the Romanov family onboard the Russian imperial yacht The Standart.

“It is with feelings of the deepest satisfaction and pleasure that I welcome your Majesty and her Majesty the Queen to Russian waters. I trust that this meeting, while strengthening the many and strong ties which unite our Houses, will have the happy results of drawing our countries closer together, and of promoting and maintaining the peace of the world.”

One of few entertainments the Romanov family had in captivity in Tobolsk, especially during the cold winter months when they could not go outside, was putting on plays. The youngest imperial children were especially enthusiastic about dressing up and memorizing the lines, and had a lot of fun doing it. Grand Duchess Olga was in charge of writing out the scripts and . Some of these scripts written in her hand survived and are currently kept at the Russian archives in Moscow. (more…)
